About WJGA

Our Credo

At Washington Junior Golf, we are dedicated to supporting junior golfers by providing a comprehensive, competitive program which helps build character and sportsmanship, providing lifelong benefits.

History of WJGA

In the beginning, there were four . . .

Early in fall of 1976, Ron Hoetmer, Virginia (Mrs. Cal) Scarff, Randy Puetz, and Joan Teats came up with a plan for a junior golf program in the State of Washington.  Oregon had one, so why not Washington?  At that time the San Diego Junior Golf Association was going well, so we copied some of its ideas, making some changes to suit the geography of our state.  The high school district boundaries were used as guidelines with the help of Jim Sulenes, the Curtis High School golf coach.  Before too long, our plan began to take wings! From the 2014 President, Jerry Fehr
Retiring in January after 21 years as the Executive Director, I am now in a position to observe the operations of WJGA from a different perspective. Executive Director Tyler Johnsen is doing a wonderful job, and has installed many positive changes to improve our organization.

In the brief time that he has been in charge WJGA has gone to a new computer system that has made the task easier for our loyal Tournament Directors, and allowed the use of live scoring for many events. He also introduced a new format for the Junior World State Qualifying that is less work for our Tournament Directors and better for the players. Another positive was allowing payment of fees by credit card.

The 2014 season was very demanding with the hosting of the Girls’ Junior Americas Cup at Walla Walla Country Club on the schedule in addition to the usual events. We thank the many volunteers who give of their time to make the WJGA program what it is, one of the best junior programs in the country.

A special thank you goes to Cyndi Kelly who chaired the very successful State Championship in Spokane. We look forward to another great year in 2015.

From the 2014 Executive Director, Tyler Johnsen

What a great year for WJGA, my first as Executive Director, capped by a fantastic State Championship week in Spokane at Manito G&CC, Hangman Valley GC and Wandermere GC. A huge thank you to all of our Tournament Directors who make WJGA possible. Their countless hours of volunteer efforts are the engine that drives WJGA and we can’t thank them enough. Also, a special thank you to our 2014 State Tournament Chair, Cyndi Kelly. What a fantastic State Championship week she put together in Spokane for all of us.

This summer was an extra busy one for WJGA as we hosted the Girls’ Junior Americas Cup at Walla Walla Country Club the last week of July. Carol Morgan chaired the event and with all the amazing volunteer efforts it turned out to be a week to remember.

Congratulations to Sam Warkentin and Olivia Benzin for capturing the overall State Championship titles and to all of our state champions this year.

And finally, a special thank you to all of our loyal rules officials and other volunteers who help make WJGA a special program
